California is about to get blasted with a weekend of summer heat.
A scorching heat wave is set to bake Northern and Southern California this weekend, with temperatures soaring well into the triple digits after a sweltering end to July.
Sunday is expected to bring the worst of the heat, with inland communities facing highs above 100 degrees.
Los Angeles itself is forecast to stay in the upper 80s to mid-90s, but residents in the San Fernando Valley won’t be so lucky. Forecasters say the valley is expected to climb into the triple digits as dangerous conditions settle in.
“Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” the National Weather Service said in an extreme weather advisory.
The heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday, as officials urge Californians to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged time outdoors during peak afternoon hours and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
Places such as Lancaster and Palmdale already topped 100 degrees on Thursday while Palm Springs reached 110 degrees on Friday.
The Eastern San Gabriel Mountains also received a heat advisory as temperatures are expected to range from 91 to 101 on Saturday.
Major heat warnings have also been issued in cities across Northern California such as Sacramento.
“Good morning, NorCal, happy Friday! We continue our warming trend today, with highs in the mid to upper 90s in most of the Valley, except in the northern Sacramento Valley where triple digit heat is in the forecast,” the US National Weather Service Sacramento California said on Facebook.
The combination of intense heat and winds could also lead to a large risk of wildfires. To prepare, California state agencies are coordinating with officials to track conditions and deploying fire engines and crews.
While temperature are predicted to cool after the weekend, temperatures will still remain abnormally high throughout next week.
