Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are about to run it back in WNBA's most anticipated rematch

1 hour ago 3

The WNBA doesn't usually get playoff atmospheres in June. Then again, there aren't many matchups quite like Caitlin Clark versus Angel Reese. Just 48 hours after delivering one of the most entertaining games of the season, the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream are set to meet again Saturday afternoon in a rematch that suddenly feels much bigger than a regular-season contest.

Thursday's showdown had everything. A packed Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Two championship contenders trading blows. A furious Indiana comeback. A clutch response from Atlanta. And, of course, star performances from both Clark and Reese. Now they're doing it all over again. And this time, the stakes feel even higher.

Thursday's thriller changed everything

The Fever entered Thursday riding a four-game winning streak and looking every bit like a team capable of making a deep postseason run. Instead, Atlanta walked into Indianapolis and reminded everyone why it has become one of the WNBA's toughest teams. The Dream escaped with a 108-101 victory in what many around the league viewed as an early playoff preview. Indiana erased a 13-point deficit and tied the game with just over five minutes remaining after a spectacular Sophie Cunningham reverse layup sent the crowd into a frenzy.

But Atlanta never panicked. The Dream responded with a decisive late run and left Indianapolis with one of the most impressive road wins of the season. Now the question becomes simple:

How will the Fever respond?

Caitlin Clark is coming off another statement performance

Lost in the defeat was another big night from Clark. The Fever superstar finished with 26 points and seven assists while debuting her highly anticipated Nike signature shoe, the Caitlin 1. Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston once again showed why they may be the most dangerous offensive trio in the WNBA. Mitchell scored 26 points and reached 700 career three-pointers, while Boston added 23 points and eight rebounds.

Incredibly, it marked the sixth time this season that Clark, Mitchell and Boston all scored at least 20 points in the same game. That makes Thursday's loss even more surprising. When all three stars are rolling, Indiana usually wins.

Atlanta found a way anyway.

Angel Reese delivered when the Dream needed her most

If Clark starred for Indiana, Reese did the same for Atlanta. The Dream forward finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds despite spending much of the night battling foul trouble. More importantly, she delivered when the game was on the line. With Atlanta protecting a late lead, Reese converted a crucial three-point play through contact that effectively ended Indiana's comeback hopes.

It was exactly the type of moment Dream fans have come to expect from one of the league's most competitive players. Before Thursday's game, Reese spoke about Atlanta's need to finish games stronger. Then she went out and personally helped make sure it happened.

Why Saturday suddenly feels like a playoff game

The most fascinating part of this matchup is how quickly the rematch arrived. Normally, teams would have days or weeks to move on from a loss like Thursday's.

Not this time.

The Fever will arrive in Atlanta still thinking about the opportunities they missed. The Dream will arrive believing they just proved they can beat one of the league's hottest teams under intense pressure.

Both sides know another victory could send a message to the rest of the WNBA.

For Indiana, it's a chance to show Thursday was merely a bump in the road. For Atlanta, it's an opportunity to confirm that the first win was no fluke.

And for fans? It's another chapter in the growing Clark-Reese era that continues to draw attention every time the two stars share the same court. One game wasn't enough.

Now the WNBA gets the rematch everyone wanted.
