Burnley captain to depart club ahead of The Clarets' return to the Premier League

Newly promoted Premier League side, Burnley, have suffered a tremendous blow ahead of the upcoming season.

Scott Parker's side are losing one of their most influential and consistent stars as captain, Josh Brownhill, is on his way out of the club.

The midfielder was instrumental in Burnley finishing second and securing automatic promotion from the Championship last season.

He managed to find the back of the net 18 times in the league and provided six assists. His two goals against Sheffield United in April were among his most important, as those confirmed Burnley's promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Burnley were keen to extend Brownhill's contract as it was due to run out this summer and began conversations over a new deal.

Although, doubts began to grow over the 29-year-old's future at the club and a stay with The Clarets appeared increasingly unlikely.

After months of uncertainty over his future, Brownhill announced his decision to leave on Monday evening (28 July).

Why did Brownhill choose to depart Burnley?

Brownhill provided clarity to Burnley fans on his big decision through social media.

In a lengthy post on X, the player explained: "My decision has only ever been about me wanting to challenge myself further and continue to grow as a person and a professional."

"I feel that a new project at this point in my career simply allows me to do that."

Brownhill then proudly reflected on his five-and-a-half years at Burnley, stating: "To wear the captain's armband for this club was a real honour and something I felt privileged to do every day."

"From big goals in critical moments, trying to drive high standards every day and displaying the values of the community through my work on the pitch - I hope you can see as fans that I have always given my all for this great club."

Brownhill does not have an agreement with a new club as of yet, but he has been linked with potential moves to West Ham United and Celtic.

Burnley have strengthened this summer, particularly with the arrivals of multi-time Premier League winner and veteran defender Kyle Walker from Manchester City, as well as forward, Loum Tchaouna, from Lazio.

Marcus Edwards, Jaidon Anthony, Bashir Humphreys and Zian Flemming have also joined on permanent deals after spending time on loan with The Clarets last season.

However, losing Brownhill's leadership and quality will be a major blow for Parker in his upcoming attempt to keep his newly promoted side in the Premier League this upcoming season.
