The plot of Bugonia revolves around Michelle Fuller, the CEO of a pharmaceutical company called Auxolith. One day, she is kidnapped by Teddy Gatz, a conspiracy theorist, and his cousin Don.

Upon hearing that she is an alien from a species called the Andromedans, Teddy gives her only four days to prove her innocence or else he will carry out his plan during a lunar eclipse that he believes will be the time when aliens will invade Earth.

Gradually, the story is interspersed with reminders that Sandy, the mother of the lunatic, was left in a coma after taking one of the experimental drugs by Auxolith. Being anxious and grieving about the death of his mother, Teddy gets paranoid and ends up in a rather violent spiral of delusions and confrontations.

The movie features Emma Stone as Michelle Fuller, Jesse Plemons as Teddy Gatz, Aidan Delbis as Don, Stavros Halkias as Casey, and Alicia Silverstone as Sandy Gatz. In addition, the actress is also a producer of the film.

In response to Ted's growing obsession, the story loses the distinction between reality and madness, which is evident in the last scene that unveils Michelle as an Andromedan empress.

Bugonia had its first public screening at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, and was then shown for a short time in the theatres of the United States on October 24.

Universal Pictures was in charge of the film's distribution around the world, while CJ ENM took care of its release in South Korea. The film was also available in some theaters on 35 mm alongside digital versions if viewers preferred that kind of screening.
