The 2026 free agency period has not yet begun but the Buffalo Bills are already making moves.
The team announced on Wednesday that it has signed quarterback Shane Buechele and wide receiver Jalen Virgil to one-year contracts. Both players are already familiar with Buffalo.
Buechele was on the Bills' practice squad last season. He briefly left to join the Kansas City Chiefs after they poached him off Buffalo's practice squad, but he returned to the Bills before the end of the campaign.
Buechele has completed just 7-of-14 passes for 88 yards in one NFL game. He will offer the Bills a body at quarterback during the offseason and he could compete for backup duties if Mitchell Trubisky isn't re-signed.
Virgil appeared in seven games for the Bills in 2024, doing most of his work on special teams. Virgil played 37 snaps on offense but did not record a stat.
He has two receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown during his career, all of which came during his stint with the Denver Broncos in 2022.
Like Buechele, Virgil will offer a body for the Bills during the offseason, but he does have an outside shot to legitimately compete for a roster spot given the uncertainty Buffalo has at wide receiver.
However, the most likely best-case scenario for both players is ending up on Buffalo's practice squad after cutdown day.
