The "embarrassment of riches" is how Bucs reporter Brianna Dix described the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' trio of slot weapons: Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and rookie Emeka Egbuka. This talented group offers a versatility that few teams can match.
Fans can expect head coach Todd Bowles and wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon to design diverse plays with this trio.
While each brings versatility, Dix highlighted a shared quality beneath it all.
"Each with their own niche and proficiencies, Godwin, McMillan and Egbuka have one thing in common: Mental stamina," Dix shared on Wednesday.
Wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon elaborated on the importance of this mental toughness. "They are really smart. To be able to do all of the things that we ask, you have to be able to think and process really quickly," McClendon said.
He emphasized that the slot receivers' responsibilities are complex. "It is not, 'Hey, on this play we are doing this no matter what.' On one play, it could be four different things that we do and four different ways that you have to do it depending on different techniques."
Chris Godwin, the veteran of the group, has been a reliable slot target through 2024 with 50 receptions, 576 yards and five touchdowns on 62 targets.
Jalen McMillan, entering his second year, showed strong promise late last season as his role expanded. Emeka Egbuka is poised to add fresh talent as he begins his NFL career in 2025.
