Admittedly, it's not difficult to be a fan of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who is a modern-day basketball "unicorn" in every sense of the word.
He has also drawn strong praise from a number of his NBA peers, including the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP, nine-time All-Star and 2021 NBA Finals champion in his own right.
Giannis and his brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex attended an event hosted by eBay Live at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago on Aug. 2. All four brothers were asked about pieces of sports memorabilia they wished they owned, and Giannis was quick with his response.
"Maybe, a club from Tiger Woods," Giannis said. "I want Wemby's first rookie card ever."
Wembanyama's rookie cards are already among the most sought-after commodities in the collectibles market, making Giannis' answer unsurprising. But the comment is also an admission that he has strong belief in Wembanyama's ability to achieve his potential, thereby making such cards more valuable.
Giannis doubled down on his praise of Wembanyama shortly afterwards.
"I think he's going to be one of the best players in the league in the next couple years. I think he'll have a very great career moving forward," Giannis said. "So maybe, like, a jersey, his first jersey, or his first basketball shoe when he played in his first NBA game. Or the first ball that he played with, when he scored his first point.
"You've got to go with Wemby, Steph[en Curry], LeBron [James], MJ [Michael Jordan]. Those are great investments."
Only time will tell whether Wembanyama's name will be mentioned among those greats when he hangs up his basketball shoes. But having earned an All-Star nod and a Rookie of the Year Award in his first two seasons, he's already on the fast track to success.
