Bucks get major news on Giannis Antetokounmpo plan

Would the Milwaukee Bucks really trade Giannis Antetokounmpo?

The face of the franchise and one of the Association’s preeminent superstars led the Bucks to their first title in 50 years back in 2021. However, a lack of recent postseason success and an unclear vision from the front office have complicated things.

Antetokounmpo is also reportedly open to exploring other options, paving the way for mass trade speculation.

But, here is the latest, via Bobby Marks of ESPN:

“It would be easy for the Bucks to put Antetokounmpo on the trade market, especially in light of Lillard's Achilles injury and consecutive losses in the first round. However, sources confirmed to ESPN that Milwaukee will be aggressively exploring options in free agency and trades to complement Antetokounmpo.”

Antetokounmpo does have a player option for the 2027-28 season, meaning he could become a free agent in summer 2027. The Damian Lillard experiment has been a disaster, and his recent achilles tear leaves his NBA future in question.

Milwaukee dealing Antetokounmpo would likely garner the most significant package of prospects and picks ever, especially given Desmond Bane commanded four first-round picks when the Memphis Grizzlies sent him to the Orlando Magic.

But, the odds of any of those prospects or picks turning into even 75% of the player Antetokounmpo is feels unlikely. The 30-year-old is a 9x All-Star, 9x All-NBA, 5x All-Defensive, 2x MVP, and was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team (to name just a few of his accomplishments).

The Bucks are also not a franchise or destination that regularly attracts top free agents. Losing Antetokounmpo would not enhance that image.

Perhaps Milwaukee blows up the rest of the roster and continues to build around Antetokounmpo. That feels like the best option, but the clock is winding down, and moves need to be made.
