Baker Mayfield is different, and that's OK.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback found himself in a situation Thursday that most QBs would get out of the way of, but Mayfield got right in the middle.
The Buccaneers were holding a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans, and a fight broke out.
Mayfield got right in the middle of it.
“It’s gonna happen, and our group’s not gonna back down,” Mayfield told reporters. “You’re going to shove people late in the back, we’re not gonna back down. We’re not gonna start it, because we’re not stupid, but we’ll finish it.”

There was one unlikely participant, though. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, on crutches, got involved.
“He needs to stay his a— on the sideline with those crutches,” Mayfield said. “I was in the middle of it. It was fun.”
The 30-year old Mayfield said earlier this offseason that the reason he has been so successful with the Buccaneers is that they've allowed him to be himself.
He joined Tampa Bay before the 2023 season after a journey of a season between the Panthers and Rams. He was the Browns' No. 1 overall pick in 2018 and lasted four years in Cleveland.

In his first Bucs season, Mayfield threw 28 touchdowns and led Tampa Bay to a 9-8 record.
It got better in 2024: a 10-7 record, 4,500 passing yards, a 71.4% completion percentage and 41 passing touchdowns.
Mayfield is a bonafide star, one of the top QBs in football.
Sure, he's a gunslinger who throws a bunch of interceptions. So are a bunch of guys who are in the Hall of Fame now.
Most importantly, Mayfield is himself. And that's more than enough for the Buccaneers to have a chance in every single football game they play.
