Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield lock in historic NFL contract

One of the biggest questions hanging over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers heading into this season was if and when they would be able to lock quarterback Baker Mayfield into a new contract.

It really didn't seem like a deal would get done before the regular season starts. It's only a few days away, after all. But, in a last-minute surprise, the Buccaneers and Mayfield have reportedly agreed to a contract extension.

The Bucs have given Mayfield a three-year contract extension, according to multiple sources, including NFL insiders Ian Rapoport, Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo.

According to a post on X from Schefter, the "two-time Pro-Bowl selection Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers reached agreement today on a three-year contract extension that will prevent the quarterback from becoming a free agent after this season, per me and (Rapoport)."

He added, "Mayfield had broken off talks as camp opened, but with the regular season kicking off this week, a deal has been revisited and now struck."

The new contract gets Mayfield around $55 million per year, according to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer.

Mayfield's last contract with the Bucs was signed in 2024.

While the timing of the deal is a surprise, what's not unexpected is the signing, in general. In July of last summer, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht told The Athletic's Jeff Howe that he wanted to keep the high-caliber Mayfield.

"I love Baker. I love everything he's done for us," he said. "The goal for us is for Baker to continue to be the player that he is, and at some point, we reach an extension when the time is right and he continues to be our quarterback for a long time. That's the goal."

So, the Buccaneers can sleep a little more sound knowing their franchise quarterback isn't going anywhere.
