Bruno Fernandes admits Man United exit could happen after Europa League nightmare

4 hours ago 1

Manchester United fans saw their final chance for silverware ended by defeat to Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final on May 21.

The Red Devils faced off with their fellow Premier League strugglers in Bilbao - in an unlikely final pairing - but it was Spurs who ended their 17-year wait for a trophy.

Brennan Johnson's scrappy first-half goal proved to be the difference as United failed to rally a response after the restart at the Estadio San Mames.

Defeat means United will not qualify for any European competition next season and they will finish in their lowest spot in EPL history.

The final day of the campaign will dictate exactly where they end up on May 25, with Ruben Amorim's team currently sat in 16th position, just one point above Spurs in 17th place.

Questions are once again swirling over Amorim's future with the United boss admitting he will accept whatever decision the club takes over his role in the coming weeks.

However, Amorim is not the only United figure considering his next step, with club captain Bruno Fernandes hinting his time at the club could also be up, if the Red Devils hierarchy opt for a change in direction.

Is Bruno Fernandes leaving Man United?

As emotions ran high after the defeat in Bilbao, Fernandes mirrored his manager in claiming bold decisions could be incoming, and the 30-year-old hinted that could include his own position.

"I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me it’s time to go," he told Sky Sports.

"I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club back to its greatest days. But, at the end of the day, if the club thinks I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it.

"If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cash in or whatever, it’s what it is, and football sometimes is like this."

Fernandes' statement will cause shockwaves for fans, as the Portugal international has been a leading light in a dreadful campaign, with 19 goals and 15 assists across all competitions.

The former Sporting CP playmaker is under contract at Old Trafford until 2027 - with the option for another 12 months - amid long-standing transfer interest from the Saudi Pro League.

United face some huge decisions over the summer, with a major player exodus expected, and Fernandes is an asset that could bring in a fee of around £45m [$60m].
