Browns risk losing star veteran if they don't make a quick move

The Cleveland Browns already moved on from Myles Garrett this offseason in the blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

That doesn't mean they should get rid of all their veterans, though. As they try to move back toward contention, it helps to have some quality leaders on the field.

One of those guys? Grant Delpit.

The Browns are in a tricky spot with Delpit, because he has reached the final year of his contract.

Cleveland's best route, writes ESPN's Aaron Schatz on Thursday, is to try to extend Delpit.

Delpit is still close enough to his prime that he can be a playmaker for whatever version of the Browns emerges over the next couple of seasons.

"Delpit is still playing at a high level," Schatz writes. "It can be hard to judge safety play, whether you use statistics or scouting, but Sports Info Solutions ranked him seventh among all safeties in its 'total points saved' metric last season."

It would be wise for Cleveland to continue considering the future in its roster moves, but that doesn't always automatically mean getting younger.

"(Delpit's) contract is set to void after the 2026 season," Schatz writes. "He'll be 29 years old for the 2027 season and could still play an important role on defense if the Browns are actually more successful at rebuilding this time. He would be a good veteran to keep around for the next couple of seasons."

The Garrett trade was a different situation, with a long-term contract for a superstar able to fetch a lot of return value in a deal.

On an expiring contract, trading Delpit probably wouldn't be worth it. Extending him still could be.
