Shedeur Sanders likely didn’t expect to be heavily involved in trade rumors before the start of his second NFL season.
Did the Colorado Product perform well when allowed to start for the Browns in Year 1? Not necessarily, as he showed that he struggles to read defenses at a high level and make the right plays under pressure (he finished the year with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns).
Still, given the fact that he’s a developmental signal-caller who enjoyed several positive moments as a rookie, being floated as a potential trade candidate more than likely threw him for a loop.
According to SportsBoom’s Jason L. Canfora, the Browns have made their stance clear on cutting ties with Sanders after one season.
“Much has been made of the Cleveland Browns quarterback situation this offseason,” Canfora wrote last Sunday.
“Ultimately, SportsBoom continue to hear that veteran Deshaun Watson, finally at the completion of a $230M, fully guaranteed contract, is very much the favorite to end up starting in Week 1, regardless of all the speculation about other quarterbacks on the roster.”
“But the Browns are not expected to move Shedeur Sanders anytime soon, according to league sources, with head coach Todd Monken a believer in him and with Watson coming off consecutive lost seasons and with a deep injury history.”
The Browns are making the right decision to see things through with the 2025 fifth-round pick. Even if Sanders doesn’t start for the Myles Garrett-less Browns this season, it would be nice to have him as a backup to Deshaun Watson and position him for valuable reps in an emergency role.
Of course, Cleveland could quickly change its mind if it’s presented with a trade offer that checks off all the boxes. However, as it stands now, Sanders and the Browns don’t appear to be headed toward a split.
