Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders will remain a member of the Cleveland Browns through the summer. At least. His 101 MPH speeding incident won’t go unnoticed, but it doesn’t seem likely to set him back in any meaningful way.
Certainly, it does nothing to propel him forward. Sanders is in distant last place in the Browns’ four-man quarterback competition with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
As Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot notes, Cleveland’s offseason plan includes keeping Sanders and Gabriel to evaluate what they have in future seasons.
But another element of their plan is to play both Flacco and Pickett at the start of the season to try and win games.
“It is the most important position on the team, and you might not know this year if Shedeur and Dillon are going to be something down the road. So those guys aren't going anywhere. They're keeping Dillon and Shedeur. Those guys are going to make the football team. So you can pretty much take that to the bank, and then it's just a matter of trying to figure out what you would want to do with Joe and Kenny, and I think both of them will play this year,” Cabot said during a recent appearance on 92.3 The Fan, per SI.
By picking Gabriel in the third round and taking a flier on Sanders in the fifth, the Browns made it clear who they prioritize. Had Gabriel been taller, he would’ve been in play with the team’s No. 2 overall pick before they traded it to the Jacksonville Jaguars on the night of the draft’s first round.
Add on Cleveland keeping Flacco and Pickett, and you have an inescapable climb from the bottom for Sanders.
Keeping Sanders may be a PR play for the Browns. More attention, more jersey sales, possibly more tickets sold.
It doesn’t seem like a play meant for him to see the field anytime soon, though.
Regardless of how many caveat-laden updates we get stating the opposite.
