The Cleveland Browns have four quarterbacks competing for the starting job as training camp approaches—not including Deshaun Watson, who is still recovering from injury. For now, it appears one of the veterans will open the season under center, while the other Browns rookie—not Shedeur Sanders—may get an opportunity down the line.
“I was told from somebody that’s in the building, that ain’t a player, it’s really coming down to Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel,” TJ Houshmandzadeh said.
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick also weighed in on the Browns' quarterback situation, and he believes the team will lean on experience to start the season.
“If I was a betting man, Joe Flacco is gonna go into the year as the starter,” Fitzpatrick said. “He has history there, he has success there, and I think it’s a great story. He’s a guy that’ll bring calm, he’s the guy that’s going to be able to get them off on the right foot,” Fitzpatrick said. “As the season goes along, when you draft guys early, and when you have young exciting guys, they’re excited for Gabriel, we could see him inserted into the lineup.”
Sanders is entering his first NFL training camp, but when he was drafted, analyst Emmanuel Acho labeled him “a camp body.” If that proves true, the Browns could consider moving him—possibly to the Los Angeles Rams.
“Matthew Stafford is still capable, but the Rams don’t have a clear succession plan. Sanders could sit behind him, learn the nuances of Sean McVay’s system, and grow into a potential starter down the line. His timing-based game and quick release would fit the scheme, and there’d be no pressure to play early,” Dawg Pound Daily’s Mark Sipos wrote.

Sanders will need further development, and the Rams could provide the ideal environment for that. Sitting behind Stafford, he’d have time to learn and grow. When Stafford eventually retires, Sanders could be well-positioned to take over as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
