Browns poach 18-game starter from Patriots to add depth in wake of Dawand Jones injury

The Cleveland Browns' offensive line was dealt a devastating blow after left tackle Dawand Jones came down with a season-ending injury.

Jones, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 3, was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, as expected. Upon making that move, the Browns added much-needed depth at the position.

The team announced it has signed offensive tackle Thayer Munford Jr. off the New England Patriots' practice squad.

A former seventh-round pick of the Raiders in 2022, Munford has started in 18 of the 46 games he has played in during his NFL career, with his 10 starts in 2023 being a career-high for him.

Munford began last season as the Raiders' starter at right tackle but didn't last long and was replaced by 2024 third-round pick, DJ Glaze.

Munford was expected to play a backup role in Las Vegas this season, but he was cut in late August, which led to him landing on New England's practice squad.

Munford has played snaps at both right and left tackle during his career, but most of his playing time has come on the right side.

The Ohio State product did show some promise over his first two seasons in the NFL, but he saw his numbers dip considerably in 2024, with Munford registering Pro Football Focus grades of 46.6 in pass protection and 45.3 in run-blocking.

Even still, it made sense to add Munford, as the Browns just need bodies at this point with Jack Conklin also dealing with an injury. Munford will offer some added depth behind Conklin and Jones' replacement, Cornelius Lucas.
