Browns' Joe Flacco given definitive update in Cleveland starting QB competition

1 hour ago 3

Joe Flacco is one of the oldest quarterbacks in the NFL.

That doesn't appear to be stopping him in his quest to be a Week 1 starter for the Cleveland Browns.

The most recent update from plugged-in Browns beat reporter Zac Jackson of The Athletic bodes well for Flacco, as he wrote this:

"Joe Flacco's two best throwing days have been the two most recent days, Friday and Saturday. Neither of the rookies ever had much of a realistic chance to win the starting job this August, and over the last week, Flacco has gone from presumed favorite to strong favorite."

"Strong favorite" is a pretty good place for Flacco to be with a month before the season.

Flacco is 40 years old now, and he's entering his 18th NFL season.

He started six games last season for the Colts, going 2-4.

The Browns will be hoping he can recreate his late-season magic from 2023. Cleveland signed Flacco off his couch, and he started five games, going 4-1 and throwing 13 touchdowns. The playoffs were a nightmare, but it was still an exciting run.

Flacco, of course, is most known as a Super Bowl champion from his days with the Ravens.

If things go well in Cleveland, Flacco can serve as a mentor to rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders while also preventing them from being thrown into the fire too early.

Flacco still has a strong right arm, and it sounds like that'll be on display in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, barring a late charge or change during the preseason for the Browns.
