A.J. Brown is still with the Philadelphia Eagles but the clock may already be ticking on his tenure in Philadelphia.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Brown is “likely” to be traded to the New England Patriots after June 1, a move driven largely by salary cap strategy rather than on-field performance.
The financial reasoning is straightforward but significant. The Eagles are facing a $40 million cap hit tied to Brown’s contract. If they trade him before June 1, that entire amount would count against their 2026 salary cap. By waiting until after June 1, they can split the hit between 2026 and 2027—creating much-needed flexibility as they reshape their roster.
What makes the situation more notable is Brown’s continued production. In the 2025 season, he recorded 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns, marking yet another 1,000-yard campaign in a career defined by consistency and explosiveness. His ability to generate big plays and command defensive attention has made him one of the league’s premier wide receivers.
Cap strategy drives potential Brown trade as Patriots eye No. 1 receiver upgrade
Despite that production, Philadelphia appears to be weighing long-term roster balance over short-term star power. With significant financial commitments across the roster, moving Brown would allow the Eagles to reallocate resources while maintaining flexibility in future seasons.
For New England, the potential trade would represent a major offensive upgrade. The Patriots have lacked a true No. 1 receiver in recent years, and Brown’s physicality, route-running, and playmaking ability would immediately elevate their passing game.
Still, several factors remain unresolved. Trade compensation, timing, and final cap considerations will all influence whether a deal is completed. The Eagles are expected to seek a significant return, reflecting Brown’s status as one of the NFL’s top wideouts.
For now, Brown remains an Eagle. But with June 1 approaching and financial realities looming, one of the league’s most productive receivers could soon be on the move—reshaping both franchises in the process.
