Brooklyn Meyer staying at South Dakota State to play a new sport

Brooklyn Meyer didn't want to leave South Dakota State yet.

Her basketball eligibility had been exhausted, but NCAA rules allowed for her to play another sport for a fifth season, and she's going to join the Jackrabbits volleyball program.

The athletic department announced the news on Friday:

Meyer was an absolute star on the basketball court. She led the Jackrabbits to the NCAA Tournament in all four of her seasons.

In her career, she scored 2,097 points, grabbed 850 rebounds and blocked 174 shots.

Why is Brooklyn Meyer playing volleyball?

Meyer wanted to remain at South Dakota State, and this is a move the NCAA allows for once four years have been played in one sport.

"She has exhausted her collegiate basketball eligibility but is permitted by the NCAA to play a fifth season in a different sport," South Dakota State wrote in their news release.

Meyer played three seasons of varsity volleyball at West Lyon High School in Larchwood, Iowa.

She's expected to play middle blocker for the Jackrabbits.

"I am so excited to join the SDSU volleyball team and represent the Jacks for another season," Meyer said in the release. "It has been so fun to watch this team over the last few years, and the opportunity to be a part of that as I pursue my master's degree is so special."
