Broncos Undrafted Rookie Spotlight: Brent Austin joins deep cornerback group

1 hour ago 3

The Denver Broncos have one of the league's more prominent secondaries, making it difficult for anyone to crack the 53-man roster at that position as an undrafted free agent.

Brent Austin is an intriguing prospect nonetheless, and he will finish up this year's undrafted spotlight series. All other Broncos undrafted prospects can be found here at The Sporting News.

Name: Brent Austin
Position: Cornerback
School: California
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 180

Austin is another well-traveled college prospect who began his collegiate career at James Madison. After two seasons there, Curt Cignetti was hired as the head coach at Indiana and while many of his players followed him there, Austin transferred to South Florida.

Born in San Bernardino, Austin chose to transfer to California to finish out his college career. He had 110 total tackles and three interceptions in his career. Two of those three picks were returned for touchdowns, so he is dangerous if he ever gets the ball in his hands.

He joins a deep cornerback group that already has five spots pretty well locked in to Pat Surtain II, Riley Moss, Ja'Quan McMillian, Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine. If the Broncos choose to keep a sixth cornerback on the roster, Austin will be competing against Reese Taylor, Jaden Robinson and fellow undrafted free agents Ahmari Harvey and Paul Manning

Chances of making final 53-man roster (1-10 scale): 2

Austin is incredibly solid in zone coverage and is adept at breaking up passes in tight windows. He will have to improve in his man-to-man skills and his lack of size is going to be a concern in that area at the professional level. However, his game film suggests a player who is learning from mistakes and growing on the field.

The Broncos have a great cornerback room and barring an injury or an unforeseen trade, it will be quite difficult to make the team. However, the progression of training camp and preseason games could reveal that Austin is the best undrafted player in the bunch for the Broncos this year. That could sway the team's decision to keep a sixth cornerback.
