Broncos rumor reveals why P.J. Locke chose Cowboys over Denver in free agency

The Dallas Cowboys have added another safety to their roster, and the veteran defensive back chose Dallas over going back to the Denver Broncos.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys are signing safety P.J. Locke to a one-year, $5 million deal.

"Sources: The Cowboys are signing former Broncos S PJ Locke to a 1 year $5M deal. He’s reunited with Christian Parker, the new Cowboys DC who previously served as Denver’s DBs coach," Schultz reported.

In the wake of that signing, Mike Klis of 9News reported that the Broncos wanted Locke back, but in a backup role.

Klis added that the opportunity to start with Dallas was what put the Cowboys over the top.

"Broncos wanted Locke back but as backup to Hufanga/Jones. He understandably wanted greater chance to start and the former Texas Longhorn found it in Dallas," Klis wrote.

Hard to argue with the logic there.

The Cowboys have a wide open situation at safety with Malik Hooker and free-agent signing Jalen Thompson, who might be utilized in the slot more than at safety, where the Cowboys also have a need.

That gives Locke, who also has experience playing in the slot, a good opportunity for more snaps in Dallas than he would've gotten in Denver.
