Broncos predicted to save Cowboys from themselves via blockbuster trade

The Denver Broncos need an upgrade at wide receiver and the Dallas Cowboys might be able to help them out.

Denver has Courtland Sutton under contract, as well as some promising young wide receivers, but with the Broncos' Super Bowl window open, the team needs more for Bo Nix, and specifically a proven veteran target.

One team the Broncos should be keeping an eye on is the Cowboys, who could make wide receiver George Pickens available via trade.

Pickens is a pending free agent, but the expectation is Dallas is going to slap the franchise tag on him, and a tag-and-trade is on the table.

If that's the approach the Cowboys take, Sports Grid's Paul Connor predicts the Broncos will step up and trade for Pickens.

"Denver has the cap space and a desperate need for a true WR1 to pair with QB Bo Nix. Rumors indicate the Broncos are willing to part with Day 2 draft capital to secure an elite playmaker," Connor explained.

Pickens is coming off a phenomenal season in which he posted a career-high 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns through the air.

While the Cowboys would like to keep him, at least based on what Jerry Jones has said, we just don't see a world where doing so makes sense.

The Cowboys are already over the cap by nearly $30 million and have a slew of needs to address on defense, and they aren't small ones, either.

The last thing the Cowboys can afford to do is pay big money to Pickens, who is projected by Spotrac to land a four-year, $122 million contract.

Pickens would offer the Broncos an upgrade on the outside opposite Sutton. The uber-talented former second-round pick can make plays at any level of the field, including deep, and he's great at contested catches.

The gamble in acquiring Pickens is his history of bad behavior.

He was a major problem for the Pittsburgh Steelers during his time there, and while he was considered to be on his best behavior in 2025, Pickens still got himself benched for missing a team bus and there were questions over effort.

That said, considering the win-now position the Broncos are in following a trip to the AFC title game in 2025, Pickens would be worth the gamble for Denver.
