Broncos' J.K. Dobbins, RJ Harvey position battle at running back has big fantasy football implications

2 hours ago 1

The Denver Broncos have a lot of running backs, and it's a lot trickier to figure out in the fantasy football world than in the NFL realm.

For the Broncos, it's a good problem to have. They can scheme up specific players for specific situations and get the best gains possible.

In fantasy, it's a nightmare. The likes of J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey would be exciting draft picks if they were known for sure to have heavy workloads coming their way, but nothing is certain.

That's especially tricky when you consider that Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime are both still in town, too, and very capable of seeing situational work for Sean Payton.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold laid out the competition in a new write-up on Monday:

"At running back, there is at least a battle to see who will get the ball in the most situations. J.K. Dobbins, who was signed during the team's June minicamp, has spent plenty of time in team drills with the starters in training camp's early going. His reliability as a pass catcher and pass blocker gives him the inside track on much of the third down work. But rookie RJ Harvey has flashed quality vision and quickness through the hole thus far, so much so coach Sean Payton has said 'he's doing exceptional.'

"Jaleel McLaughlin has shown impact as a receiver out of the backfield and Audric Estime, at 227 pounds, is the biggest of the running backs with the most potential power inside. There will be a lot to sort out and much can change, but Dobbins looks, at the moment, to check the most boxes in the most down-and-distance situations."

It sounds for the moment like Dobbins is the guy.

That's the kind of thing that could change as the season goes on. You've got an injury-prone player in Dobbins, and you've got a star rookie out of UCF in Harvey who should only get better as he adjusts to the speed of the NFL.

They could both get touchdowns stolen by Estime, and catches stolen by McLaughlin, so this may be a situation to avoid.

Harvey probably has the most upside, but maybe Dobbins has the most floor. It's a situation to monitor for the next month, because a lot could still change.
