Broncos interview former standout college QB as Davis Webb decision looms

The Denver Broncos may be calling on a former standout quarterback under Urban Meyer with a variety of football coaching experience for its next offensive coordinator.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Broncos have already interviewed Washington Commanders assistant head coach/pass game coordinator Brian Johnson for the position.

The Broncos could promote their quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who has been a candidate for head coaching jobs this cycle. He interviewed twice with the Raiders but removed himself from consideration. He also interviewed with the Ravens and Bills, and both teams chose to go a different route. Webb or head coach Sean Payton haven’t officially signaled that Webb is going to be the hire, but all signs point that way.

The Broncos also interviewed Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry for their offensive coordinator position. So, with the Rooney Rule satisfied, Denver is free to make a hire.

Prior to the Commanders, Johson, 38, worked for the Eagles from 2021 to 2023 as quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator. His coaching career began in college, where he worked at Utah, Mississippi State, Houston and Florida.

Johnson was the quarterback of the Utes in the 2008 season, leading them to an undefeated season and Sugar Bowl title. Johnson was the cover athlete of the Playstation 3 edition of NCAA Football 10. As a true freshman, he saw action as back-up to Heisman Trophy finalist Alex Smith.

Johnson does not have any obvious ties to Payton. He could potentially bring new energy to a team that recently changed offensive coordinators after reaching the AFC championship.
