The Denver Broncos have finally come to contract terms with their first-round pick, Jahdae Barron. The No. 20 overall selection in the first round agreed to a four-year deal worth up to $18.05 million with a $9.8 million signing bonus.
The Broncos will now have last year's Jim Thorpe Award winner, who stands to be the team's starting slot corner this season, in uniform for the start of training camp. Barron was the second-to-last pick of the first round to sign his rookie deal, leaving Shemar Stewart of the Bengals as the only one still outstanding.
There is also one more in Denver that still needs to be signed, and that is second-round pick RJ Harvey. Getting the shifty running back out of UCF under contract needs to become the top priority for the Broncos between now and July 25, the scheduled start of training camp.
Harvey, like many of this year's second-round picks, is holding out for guaranteed money. Deals made by the Houston Texans with Jayden Higgins and Cleveland Browns with Carson Schwesinger. Each of them received fully guaranteed contracts, and now that is what every second-round pick is looking to get, creating the possibility for a tough precedent for the league.
In May, the first two picks of the second round of the NFL Draft, Carson Schwesinger and Jayden Higgins, signed fully guaranteed contracts.
Since then, none of the remaining second-round picks have signed, as they are also seeking fully guaranteed deals, something typically… pic.twitter.com/8x0tu2IPtL
Broncos Country is not going to like the sense of entitlement being displayed by Harvey, but it's important to keep in mind that he — and the rest of the unsigned second-round picks — are being advised by their agents not to settle for less. The teams are going to try and play hardball, but there is a good chance that many of them will end up giving up the guaranteed money due to what Houston and Cleveland did.
It is important for the Broncos to get Harvey into camp as soon as possible, as the team has a lot to figure out at the running back position before the season starts. Harvey missing time won't only hinder him, it will set the running back position and perhaps even the entire offense back a bit. The front office needs to get a hold of the situation and get Harvey to agree to terms.
