The Denver Broncos lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, and the biggest problem from the loss was the injury to Patrick Surtain II. He left the game with a non-contact injury, sparking some significant concern.

Since leaving the game early, Surtain is likely to miss multiple weeks. But the latest update from an NFL insider is a lot more uncertain than it normally might be.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the update for Surtain is a "weird" one, as the star cornerback isn't believed to have sustained a season-ending injury, but he did suffer what's likely to be a multi-week ankle injury.

Patrick Surtain II suffers 'weird' ankle injury

"Saw the injury, and it was kind of a weird one," Rapoport said. "A non-contact injury, I'm told, not Achilles... Left the field, but could not put weight on it, which was strange as well... It's not an Achilles; it's some sort of an ankle injury.

While this isn't a good report from Rapoport, the uncertainty about the extent of his injury and his inability to put weight on it is not a good sign.

But, with it not being an Achilles injury, Surtain has avoided a serious injury that would have been a season-ending problem for the Broncos CB. Rapoport elaborated on his status going forward, revealing some good news for the Broncos.

"My understanding he is expected to miss time, but as of right not, believed to be season-ending," Rapoport reported.

Surtain's injury isn't a good thing at all. But hearing that he isn't expected to miss the rest of the season is at least some good news. He will miss a lot of time, just not likely the rest of the year.

It's still a strange injury for Surtain, as this injury had all the signs of a serious, potentially season-ending injury. Achilles injuries are typically non-contact. That's what it looked like at first glance.

Instead, Surtain seemingly only sustained an ankle injury, and his status going forward is still up in the air. The good news, at least, is that Denver is expecting him back. The only question is, when will Surtain actually return?
