Von Miller, the legendary Denver Broncos linebacker and probably the best defensive player in the history of the franchise, has made it no secret that he would like to return to the team.
Though Miller is beloved by Broncos fans, that idea is mostly scoffed at. Miller is considered by most to be "too old" or "past his prime". While he is 37 years old now, he still had nine sacks for the Washington Commanders in a limited role last season.
Adding Miller may just seem like a fun, nostalgic idea to some, but it was an idea that the team should at least consider, as Miller can clearly still offer production to a team. That was until the recent arrest of Jonathon Cooper following a domestic violence incident early Friday morning.
At this point, that story is filled with accusations and plenty to be sorted out, but it's something that the team is going to have to deal with. At best, all charges are dropped and Cooper proceeds with the team as usual this summer. At worst, the league decides to step in and impose its own form of discipline against Cooper, which could include a suspension.
Should Broncos be considering bringing back Von Miller?
Cooper is one of the team's starting edge rushers and though his legal situation could easily end up being cleared up, the Broncos could be looking into other options should it be deemed more serious.
Jonah Elliss is the top name behind Cooper and Nik Bonitto, but beyond that, there is a lot of youth and unproven depth. Dondrea Tillman, Drew Sanders, Que Robinson, Johnny Walker and Dasan McCullough hold the remaining spots on the roster. While there is promise in that group, it's hard to justify keeping many of them in favor of a guy like Miller, even if he is 37 years old now.
This is all to say that the Broncos should bring Miller in this summer at some point, regardless. The recent situation involving Cooper should do nothing more than stir up that discussion. Miller should be signed to a one-year deal and added to the 90-man roster. If he can't outperform an undrafted player like McCullough or an oft-injured player like Sanders, then the team can move on.
