Broncos add two linebackers to roster, place promising rookie on IR

The Denver Broncos added two new linebackers to their roster after already experiencing some setbacks at the inside linebacker position.

After seeing Drew Sanders (foot) and Alex Singleton (thumb) go down with injuries in the first few days of training camp, the Broncos have brought in a couple of free agents to at least get them through the summer.

The Broncos have brought in linebackers Garrett Nelson and Garett Wallow

Undrafted out of Nebraska in 2023, Nelson has played for both the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins but has yet to make a 53-man roster. He has spent the past two springs playing for the San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL.

Wallow was a fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2021 and spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He has 42 career tackles and one sack.

To make room for Nelson on the roster, the Broncos placed undrafted free agent Johnny Walker, Jr., a player some felt had an outside chance to make the team, on injured reserve. To make room for Wallow, the Broncos released cornerback Mario Goodrich, who was signed after the UFL season ended

Singleton should return to practice this week despite breaking his thumb in practice last week. The Broncos are wise to add a couple of depth options and if either Nelson or Wallow can show some special teams skills, they could be considered for spots on the practice squad.

The Broncos likely only see this as a small problem for now, but Sanders is going to miss a good chunk of time. These signings are just placing a band-aid on the issue and the Broncos should still consider making a more significant move
