British Open 2025 purse, payout breakdown: How much prize money does the winner make?

5 hours ago 1

The British Open has proved a royal affair as of late, with three of the last four tourneys taking place on a course designated as regal by the British crown: Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland, Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England and Royal George in Sandwich, England.

This year, there's another eminently kingly venue set to host Open Championship festivities: Royal Portrush, a 36-hole monstrosity located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The title of the site isn't just a reflection of its stature in the British sporting landscape. It's also a suggestion of what could be on offer for those participating in the event. There's plenty at play when the world's best golfers take the grass at the 7,337-yard pasture, including some decent spoils, for those who make it past the cut.

With that, here's what you need to know about the payout for the 2025 British Open.

British Open tournament purse 2025

The R&A is distributing some $17.1 million worth of prize money to contestants in this year's tournament, equal to last year's mark.

The British Open lags behind its fellow majors in terms of purse payouts. Nevertheless, it still offers players a healthy return on investment—assuming, of course, that they make it into the weekend.

This year's tourney is the first since 2012 to not feature a pay bump. That's a bit of an anomaly in the present day; LIV Golf's arrival appears to have sparked some additional investment into the sport and its signature events.
