Brighton veteran tipped to back up Harry Kane for England

Brighton played out a thrilling 2-1 victory against Newcastle, with striker Danny Welbeck recording his second brace of the season.

The 34-year-old has scored four goals this season, tied for fourth with several players in the Premier League Golden Boot race.

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes that Thomas Tuchel should include Welbeck in his England squad, with Cascarino believing Welbeck is the perfect backup for Harry Kane.

What did Cascarino say about Welbeck?

Speaking to talkSPORT, Cascarino said, "Well, certainly on what he's capable of, there's not much of a debate.

"If he were 21, everyone would be raving about getting him in the England squad, but the fact he's 34, it's too late."

Last season, Welbeck scored 11 goals in all competitions, proving he can still play up to Premier League standards.

Cascarino continued, "He's absolutely on form, but if you take his numbers last year, I think he's got 11 goals in total, four this year, which isn't bad, but he does go through droughts in games.

"But Danny's a player that contributes in many other ways, it's not just looking at his goal record, it's not super impressive, it's decent, but he's still a very good team player

"I've never heard anyone say that he's a negative, anything bad about his approach and professionalism, he's just been a great senior pro.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Brighton give him another year as Danny is still very capable."

Welbeck has not earned an England appearance since 2018, but Cascarino believes he should be recalled by Tuchel for the upcoming international break in November.

The former striker said, "I wouldn't have a problem if he did get called up, that's for sure.

"Watkins has done a lot for Villa in the last few years and he's maybe the No.2 to Kane. But there is a big gap between one and two here, Kane is so far ahead of everybody and he has been for 10 years.

"But if it was someone you needed to add, I wouldn't have any problem in calling u Danny Welbeck."
