Stephen A. Smith traded hot takes for high stakes on General Hospital this week — and he wasn’t about to let Sonny Corinthos flatline on his watch.
In true soap opera fashion, Smith took a break from his day job as an NBA analyst to make his dramatic return on April 28 to “General Hospital,” the longest-running American soap opera currently in production — bursting onto the scene with a syringe-stopping, gun-dodging entrance worthy of a Corinthos family twist.
[Cue the scene: fade in — hospital room, soft beeping monitors, danger in the air.]
While mob boss Sonny Corinthos lies unconscious, recovering from a recent cardiac scare, a nurse enters — or so it seems. But her shifty eyes and shaky hands give her away, and when she reaches for a syringe filled with something far more deadly than medicine, it’s clear she’s no caregiver… she’s an assassin.
Just then, the door swings open and in walks Brick (played by Smith) cool as ever, timing impeccable.
“Sorry to interrupt, but I’m going to need to see some ID,” he says smoothly, with the kind of calm swagger that could rattle any hitwoman.
Without missing a beat, the impostor whips out a gun, but Brick is quicker. With a sharp flick of his wrist and the effortless precision of someone who’s been in far more dangerous situations than a press room, he pulls his own weapon and fires first, neutralizing the threat before Sonny — or anyone else — has a chance to blink.
Smith first appeared on the show in 2016, playing Brick in two episodes. Since that time, he's returned around 44 times as a recurring character involved in various storylines, including assisting Sonny with security and surveillance.
Because in Port Charles, loyalty runs deep, danger is always one room over, and even sports analysts get their hero moment.
