Brewers unlikely to make $14 million option decision on trade deadline pickup

The Milwaukee Brewers are a team well known for their ability to build a contender utilizing a smaller payroll than many of the other top teams in the league.

But they're willing to spend when necessary. Whether it's a good pitcher or position player, the Brewers aren't afraid to spend if it's for the right reasons. In the case of one of their mid-season trade deadline pickups, a $14 million option decision is likely easy.

ESPN's Jeff Passan named reliever Antonio Senzatela as a player whose 2027 team option is not likely to be picked up. Milwaukee would spend $14 million on Senzatela if they picked up this option, which is very unlikely to happen.

"Unlikely to be picked up... Antonio Senzatela, Brewers, $14 million (no buyout)," Passan writes.

This is likely a very easy decision for the Brewers with one of their mid-season trade deadline pickups. Senzatela is not someone the Brewers are likely to bring back next year. 

He's a 31-year-old right-handed reliever who, for the most part during his MLB career, has been incredibly underwhelming as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

He had a 5.09 ERA in 212 games for the Rockies, most of which have been spent as a starting pitcher. But this season, he moved to the bullpen and found success.

Senzatela had a 3.61 ERA in 34 outings for the Rockies, and played well enough to get the Brewers to trade for him. That's been a mistake, as he has a 5.87 ERA with Milwaukee in 16 outings so far.

With his struggles with the Brewers since coming over in this trade in mind, this $14 million option decision for the Brewers' front office has a very obvious answer.

Will the Brewers pick up this $14 million option? No. It would be stunning if they did. Milwaukee doesn't even need to worry about a buyout either. This will be a very easy decision for the Brewers.
