Brewers shift bullpen hierarchy, move Megill

Trevor Megill’s breakout season was one of the bright spots for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025. The right-hander made 50 regular-season appearances, posting a 2.49 ERA and notching 30 saves, the fourth most in the National League.

Megill might have reached even higher totals if not for a right flexor strain that sidelined him for nearly a month. He landed on the injured list in late August and didn’t return until the final day of the regular season, a tune-up meant to prepare him for the Brewers’ postseason run.

After a blowout win in Game 1 of their division series against the Chicago Cubs, the Brewers’ top relievers were barely needed. But Game 2, a contest decided by four runs, offered a clearer picture of the club’s bullpen hierarchy — and Megill’s changing role.

Manager Pat Murphy called on Megill in the eighth inning, then turned to Abner Uribe to close out the ninth. While Megill served as Milwaukee’s primary closer for much of the season, Murphy appears to have shifted those duties to Uribe for the postseason.

Uribe earned that trust with an exceptional campaign of his own. The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 1.67 ERA and seven saves across 75 appearances, tied for seventh most in the majors. He struck out 90 batters in 75 1/3 innings, establishing himself as one of baseball’s most durable and dominant relievers.

As the Brewers look to finish off a sweep of the Cubs, Megill appears poised to serve as the setup man ahead of Uribe.
