Brewers rumored to have made $30 million contract decision on a 21-year-old prospect

While the Milwaukee Brewers might not be spending as much as the top teams in the league, they're smart about their money and how they build their team.

As evidenced by their recent success, their decision-making is clearly working well for the franchise. One of the more interesting moves was their Cooper Pratt $50 million extension before he ever played in the Major Leagues.

And according to Spencer Michaelis of the Brewer Fanatic Podcast on Twitter/x, a recent Brewers rumor hinted at Milwaukee making a very fascinating $30 million contract decision on 21-year-old top prospect Luis Lara over the next eight years.

Brewers rumor involves an eight-year, $30M Luis Lara contract

"Sources are telling me that the Brewers have, as speculated, agreed to terms on an extension with Top 100 prospect Luis Lara," Michaelis shared. "The deal is expected to be for 8 years, and roughly $30 million, with two team options and incentives/escalators included."

This is a very fascinating rumor for the Brewers. While signing a player to a long-term deal before they make their MLB debut isn't a strange move for the Brewers, this would be a much more interesting decision.

A roughly $30 million contract over the next eight years for the 21-year-old outfield prospect would be a very fascinating deal for the Brewers and Lara to agree to.

Jon Heyman of The New York Post backed up Michaelis report, as he's reporting Lara and the Brewers have agreed to terms on a $31 million contract over seven years. This is a huge deal for the Brewers this season.

ESPN's Jeff Passan also reported on the extension, which noted three club options and a maximum value of a $79 million on this massive contract extension for the Brewers prospect.

While he might not have the best power, his elite defense and speed more than make up for any lack of power he has in his game.

This season at Triple-A, Lara has a .338 batting average, a .500 slugging percentage, and a .947 OPS in 56 games with seven homers, 69 hits, 49 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, 27 RBIs, 39 walks to 32 strikeouts, and 18 stolen bases.

Lara has been great this season, and the Brewers being able to sign him to a long-term deal like the one Michaelis is reporting on would be an incredible outcome.

Between Passan, Heyman, and Michaelis, it's clear the Brewers just made an incredible extension with a top prospect. Getting Lara under club control for so long at such a cheap contract figure is a great sign for the future of the Brewers.
