Brentford stance revealed as Newcastle claim made after Mbeumo to Man Utd transfer

Newcastle United came into this transfer window believing they had a clear shot at signing Bryan Mbeumo, who had impressed their coaching staff and front office with his relentless displays on the right wing in past encounters.

Eddie Howe had quietly earmarked the Cameroon international as a perfect fit for his system, someone who could stretch the field and bring goals in key moments.

Reportedly, The Tyneside club did make early moves but Mbeumo, who had been quietly admiring Manchester United for years was already leaning towards Old Trafford before any serious talks could progress.

As per reports, Mbeumo’s wage demands were considered excessive by the Magpies and even more decisive was the player’s own ambition, who was adamant on playing for Man United.

After weeks of negotiations, United closed the deal with the Brentford on July 21.

The fee could climb to £71m [$83m] with add-ons with Mbeumo potentially earning £250,000 [$337,000] a week.

“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” Mbeumo said during his unveiling.

“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players,”

“Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future.

This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

In the background, however, the selling club had other plans.

Brentford wanted to sell Mbeumo to Newcastle United

According to the Athletic-  Brentford strongly encouraged Mbeumo to accept offers from clubs like Newcastle who were ready to pay a higher transfer fee.

Tottenham also understood the full financial demands of the deal but knew it would require a significant investment to complete and although Mbeumo clearly wanted to join Man United, Brentford made it clear they would not accept a cheaper offer just because of his personal preference.
