A Texas court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted an injunction requested by Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, according to Pete Thamel. The ruling will allow Sorsby to temporarily continue his collegiate football career while his broader legal battle with the NCAA moves forward.
The case is scheduled for trial on February 8, 2027 in a Texas court, coming just weeks after the College Football Playoff National Championship. Meanwhile, sports analyst Aaron Torres shifted responsibility away from the judiciary and toward Texas Tech in the whole Sorsby situation.
“I don't blame the judge,” Torres said. “You know who I blame? I blame Texas Tech because here is the thing. I'm not comparing one to the other, but I kind of am. In the case of Texas Tech, I understand that Brendan Soresby did not commit a crime. I'm not comparing it to the worst things that any human being has ever done.
“But there is a line that every school has to draw and say, listen, we want to win as much as anybody… And it can be done, by the way. We have seen schools suspend, throw guys off of a team, say that they are not welcome to players who have eligibility, who by the court of law are allowed to play, who by NCAA rule are allowed to play. We see it happen all the time… What I am saying is that every school has a threshold where they just say we're not going to tolerate.”
Sorsby’s case stemmed from his admission that he placed more than 9,000 bets totaling at least $90,000 during his college career, including wagers connected to Indiana while he was part of the Hoosiers in 2022. However, the court found that without the injunction, he would face “a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury,” as he would be unable to participate in Texas Tech’s 2026 football season.
NCAA president Charlie Baker publicly criticized the ruling during remarks to the National Association of Collegiate Directors, warning that it could set a concerning precedent. Meanwhile, with the injunction in place, Sorsby will avoid entering the NFL Supplemental Draft.
