Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr. makes official decision on Home Run Derby

The Atlanta Braves got Ronald Acuña Jr. back this year, and he has been on a tear. He is playing like he should be an MVP Award candidate and will play a huge role in whether or not the Braves turn things around.

Since his return to the big leagues, Acuña has a .385/.496/.692 slash line. He has already hit nine home runs in 29 games. He is fourth among outfielders in All-Star game votes despite limited games. However, he announced he will be part of All-Star Weekend by joining the Home Run Derby.

Acuña is the first official participant in this year's Home Run Derby. It is his third overall home run derby, but he is looking for his first victory. He was eliminated by Pete Alonso in both 2019 and 2022. However, it is fitting that the superstar will try to win his first derby in his home ballpark this year.

"I'm Ronald Acuña Jr. because of them," Acuña said of the Braves fans, per CBS Sports.

Despite playing in just 29 games, Acuña is tied for fourth on the team in home runs. There is no doubt about the power he has at the plate. The 2023 National League MVP has hit 174 career home runs. Acuña is also a four-time All-Star and has a chance to earn his fifth nod this year.

When Acuña won MVP, he stole 73 bases. He has been more tame on the basepaths this year, after two ACL tears in his career. However, he is still making a huge impact for the Braves. The Braves have an uphill battle to make the postseason, but if Acuña keeps swinging the bat the way he has, they have a chance.
