The Atlanta Braves are in the midst of a brutal stretch, having lost seven of their last nine games. It has been a difficult road trip for Atlanta, allowing the Braves to lose significant ground in the NL East.
Back in July, the Braves called up a nine-year minor league veteran to the roster.
“To take Yastrzemski’s place on the roster, the Braves called up outfielder Brewer Hicklen. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Hicklen is hitting .300 with 16 home runs and 55 runs driven in this season at Triple-A Gwinnett. Hicklen made his MLB debut for the Royals in 2022, and has also played for the Brewers and Tigers at the big league level,” AJC.com’s Chad Bishop wrote.
With the Braves participating in the Little League Classic, they were allowed to bring up an additional player. Atlanta decided to recall Hicklen, who quickly became a fan favorite during his brief stint with the team.
“The Braves today appointed OF Brewer Hicklen as the additional player for the Little League Classic against the Milwaukee Brewers,” the Braves posted.
Hicklen grew up in Alabama, which made him a Braves fan from an early age. Not only did he get another opportunity in the majors back in July, but he got to do it for his favorite team growing up. His gratitude for being a Brave is part of what made him so popular with fans.
“It's such a blessing. I just think back to the journey that it's taken to get here… I really can't put into words how thankful I am for the Braves organization… As a kid, growing up in Alabama, there's nothing more I wanted in life than to play for the Atlanta Braves,” Hicklen said.
Whether this opportunity lasts only a day or turns into something more permanent, Hicklen is grateful for the chance to play for Atlanta. He has truly embodied the definition of a baseball grinder, spending most of his professional career in the minor leagues while continuing to work toward another opportunity in the majors.
Now, Hicklen will have the chance to face one of his former teams when the Braves take on the Milwaukee Brewers. With Atlanta struggling, he could provide the spark the team needs to get back on track. Hicklen has already shown that when an opportunity comes his way, he is going to make the most of it.
