Braves predicted to win Tarik Skubal sweepstakes thanks to one prospect

The Atlanta Braves are going to buy at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, and while offensive help in the outfield or at shortstop would be nice, the starting rotation is a very pressing need that has to be resolved.

Fortunately, it's a good year to need starting pitching help. But, if the Braves want to truly contend for a World Series title, as they have the potential to do this year, they should pursue Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers.

That's going to be hard, but ESPN's David Schoenfield is predicting that the Braves win the Skubal sweepstakes this season thanks in large part to one prospect: 19-year-old Cam Caminiti.

Braves predicted to win Tarik Skubal sweepstakes by using Cam Caminiti

"The Dodgers, Brewers and Rays all have better farm systems than the Braves -- but Atlanta does have the best pitching prospect among the four teams in Cam Caminiti, and the Tigers would likely want a young pitcher in return," Schoenfield writes.

Acquiring Skubal from the Tigers is going to cost a fortune. But the Braves might have an inside track to landing Skubal by using their top prospect and 19-year-old pitcher, Cam Caminiti.

While giving up such a valuable prospect for a rental would sting, Skubal is arguably the best rental trade target in MLB history as the reigning back-to-back Cy Young winner.

He has a 2.79 ERA this season and is one of the best pitchers in baseball. With the Braves' dire rotation need, adding Skubal, the best starter available at this year's deadline, they could get a significant upgrade for a World Series push.

The Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Tampa Bay Rays have some great position player prospects, but the Braves, with Caminiti, have the best pitching prospect the Tigers could realistically acquire from a contender this summer.

Parting with the 19-year-old left-hander would be a huge blow for the Braves' farm system, but landing Skubal might be what it takes for the Braves to go on a very deep postseason run this year.

It's a huge risk, but it's one worth taking if it means landing Skubal in a deadline deal to pair him with Chris Sale for the home stretch of 2026 and the postseason.
