Braves predicted to part ways with $1M former first-round fan favorite despite historic grand slam

The Atlanta Braves made a last-minute decision to sign Dominic Smith, a former rival of the organization. This year, he earned a spot on the Braves’ Opening Day roster. On Saturday night, Smith proved exactly why the Braves gave him one of the final spots, hitting a walk-off home run just weeks after his mother passed away.

“Braves Dominic Smith revealed tonight's game was extra emotional. He lost his mother to cancer two weeks ago. The fan who caught the walk-off grand slam ball returned it to Smith,” Grant McAuley posted.

The grand slam sent all of Truist Park into a frenzy. After eight quiet innings, the ninth erupted into a moment that the organization and fans will remember for years. It was also historic.

“Dominic Smith is the first player in MLB history to hit a walk-off grand slam in his team debut, per Elias,” the Braves posted.

Despite the triumph, there’s still speculation that Smith could be moved once the Braves are fully healthy.

“Dominic Smith is a great bench piece to have in the Majors, he's just honestly not the best fit in Atlanta. And it feels like he would be the first man out the door when one of the big names return from injury,” FanSided’s Austin Owens wrote. “Austin Riley could move over to first, with utility guys like 2026 newcomer Mauricio Dubon handling the hot corner. Eli White also has the ability to play the infield if Mike Yazstremski is needed to take over the primary left field duties. Smith has a spot somewhere for him in the big leagues as a sturdy lefty bat, it just won't be with the Braves for the entirety of this season.”

If Smith can keep his bat hot, the veteran could continue to make an impact—but if his performance drops to average, his future in Atlanta may be limited. The Braves are certainly happy with what he’s doing right now.

However, with players like Sean Murphy and Ha-Seong Kim returning from injury soon, Smith’s continued contribution will be key if he wants to maintain his spot.
