Braves lose veteran catcher to free agency after Austin Wynns trade

A veteran catcher has decided to test free agency instead of accepting an assignment to Triple-A with the Atlanta Braves

According to the MLB.com transaction log, 31-year-old Chadwick Tromp will become a free agent after the Braves designated him for assignment last week.

Tromp has played parts of the last five seasons with the NL East club, and he also suited up for the Baltimore Orioles for six games in 2025.

Since making his debut in 2020, the right-handed hitter has never appeared in more than 24 games in a season, and his 79 games played in parts of seven seasons in the Majors are incredibly low.

Unfortunately, that's the life of a third-string catcher in professional baseball.

Tromp made 27 trips to the plate with the Braves this season, collecting five hits while striking out seven times.

MORERoman Anthony mightve been overhyped for Red Sox

Atlanta now has veterans Sandy Leon and Austin Wynns, whom they recently made a trade with the Los Angeles Angels for, while they wait for Drake Baldwin to return from the injured list.

Wynns has made three appearances behind the plate and is hitless in four at-bats thus far.
