Alex Anthopoulos and the Atlanta Braves have a real opportunity to make a major impact at the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
The Braves, who continue to be the best team in the National League, don't have much they really need to fix, but they still have to make additions at this year's deadline. The reason for that is due to the injuries the Braves have dealt with over the past few months, and even over the past few years, if we really want to signal how big of a problem some of those injuries have been.
It's unfortunate that the Braves have dealt with those injuries in the past few years, as we'd be looking at one of the better teams in Major League Baseball over that span had that not been the case.
However, those days are behind them, and all Anthopoulos can deal with right now is giving his team the best chance to win.
There's reason to believe that if the Braves make the right move or two, not only will they have an opportunity to win games at a very high level in the second half, but there's an even stronger argument to be made that they might be the best team in baseball and have a real chance of winning a World Series.
While I understand that there's some pressure on him to put together a great deadline, I don't agree with one writer who suggested that he's under just as much pressure as any other executive in Major League Baseball.
“Alex Anthopoulos already has a World Series win to his credit, and that helps ease some of the pressure he's dealing with, but the Atlanta Braves are in a position to win another title as things stand. They enter Tuesday's action with the best record in baseball despite a myriad of injuries and another disastrous Jurickson Profar contract, and they have more resources than they could've imagined entering the year.
“Not only did Profar's extension give the Braves a ton of money to spend at the deadline, but prospects like Eric Hartman and John Gil have the Braves' farm system in much better shape as well. All of a sudden, Atlanta is in a perfect spot to go big-name hunting. Can Anthopoulos win the Braves a World Series at the deadline? We've seen him do it before,” Zachary Rotman wrote.
The Braves are certainly in a position to go after a big name, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them do so.
However, even if Anthopoulos doesn't go out and make perfect moves, I don't think he's really under much pressure here.
