The Atlanta Braves head into the All-Star break with a two-game lead in the NL East, a position they will gladly take considering everything they have endured with injuries. Last season, injuries derailed Atlanta's campaign before it ever had a chance to gain momentum.
In 2026, the Braves have not allowed the injury bug to completely derail their season. However, they will likely need to make moves at the trade deadline if they want to solidify their starting rotation for the stretch run.
“The Atlanta Braves find themselves in desperate need of stability in their starting rotation. What started as a strength has quickly devolved into a glaring weakness. GM Alex Anthopoulos has some serious work to do at the trade deadline to get things back on track. Chris Sale is the only truly dependable arm in the rotation at the moment. Everyone else has been average at best,” HTHB’s Steven Teal wrote.
Atlanta was well represented during All-Star festivities. Chris Sale earned his 10th All-Star selection, while the future of Atlanta, No. 1 prospect Cam Caminiti impressed in the Futures Game.
“Cam Caminiti took the mound for the National League in the All-Star Futures Game in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Atlanta Braves' top prospect pitched a perfect top of the third inning. The first two batters, No. 9 prospect Theo Gillen (Rays No. 1) and Nelson Rada (Angels No. 1), grounded out. The third batter, Leo De Vries (A's No. 1), the No. 2 prospect in baseball, struck out swinging on a 97.2 mph fastball,” SI’s Harrison Smajovitts wrote.
While at the event, Caminiti had a chance to speak with Sale. The veteran left-hander understands his career is winding down, and Caminiti is viewed as the organization's potential successor atop the rotation. Sale shared a message with the young prospect that should excite Braves fans about Caminiti's future.
“If you're going to take my job, you're gonna do it the right way,” Caminiti told reporters Sale shared with him.
Sale understands that much of the organization's future rests with Caminiti, the Braves' top prospect. As a fellow left-hander, Caminiti has an opportunity to follow in Sale's footsteps, though filling that role will be no easy task.
With Caminiti still early in his professional career, Sale's advice offered valuable insight into the expectations that come with pitching for the Braves. The veteran ace used his years of MLB experience to motivate the young southpaw and reinforce what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Sale’s challenge should only challenge Caminiti to prove that he is going to do everything the right way until he gets called up.
