Brandon Aiyuk’s Washington Commanders dream is starting to sound less like a real world plan and more like the ravings of a madman in the wilderness.
The wide receiver continued his public campaign to land in Washington this week, posting a photo of new silver cleats with gold accents and a bold caption on his Instagram Story.
“I’m going so crazy in burgundy n gold you can stamp that!!” Aiyuk wrote.
There is just one problem: Aiyuk is still under contract with the 49ers, still has not been released, and there is no public indication the Commanders have promised him anything.
That has not stopped him from treating the move like a mere formality.
The latest post came after an already fraught back-and-forth with Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, Aiyuk’s former Arizona State teammate.
Aiyuk had been publicly pushing the idea of reuniting with Daniels in Washington, but the relationship appeared to take a turn after Daniels laughed when a fan at a World Cup match shouted an expletive about Aiyuk.
Aiyuk later fired back on social media, even dragging Daniels’ mother into the conversation. Daniels responded with a Kevin Durant thumbs-down meme, and the two reportedly unfollowed each other on Instagram.
Then Aiyuk claimed Daniels told him to handle things privately.
“He said, ‘I don’t do that internet s—, bro. Hit my phone if you gotta talk to me. You got my number,’” Aiyuk said in a video. “When I call, he don’t answer. Hit my phone, bro. It’s important. It’s the money on the line.”
That is where this gets even stranger. Aiyuk appears to be publicly begging for a private conversation with the quarterback he needs to vouch for him, while also continuing to post through the situation.
He has also made it clear he does not plan to change.
“I gotta get paid somehow, because an employer is holding me captive without pay,” Aiyuk said. “At least social media is paying. I’ll tell y’all what. If I get a job back in the NFL, I’m still going to be on my bulls— on social media.”
That may not be the reassurance interested teams are looking for.
Aiyuk is talented enough to help an NFL offense, and Washington once made sense because of his Daniels connection. But declaring “you can stamp that” before the Commanders have publicly shown interest only adds to the surreal nature of his offseason.
Aiyuk wants burgundy and gold.
Right now, it sounds like he may be the only one stamping it.
