Brad Stevens gives high praise to Celtics' 2025 first-round pick

The Boston Celtics have been going through a busy offseason as the team had to make the necessary moves to avoid the NBA's second apron while staying competitive without Jayson Tatum.

Boston will be without Tatum for a significant part of next season after he went through a procedure for a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Celtics moved key players like Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, while adding Anfernee Simons and selecting the first Spanish player in team history with their No. 28 pick in the NBA Draft, guard Hugo Gonzalez.

President of basketball operations Brad Stevens was able to speak highly of the new, 19-year-old guard who played professional basketball in Europe with Real Madrid.

"It's really clear that he's about the team, and he accepts and is willing to play any role it takes," Stevens said. "He really wants to be good. You can tell he's got a good work ethic, a good compete level. There's a care factor there."

"Cutting. A willingness to do sacrificial things, I guess. We talk about sacrificial cuts that open up opportunities for other people; we talk about sacrificial cuts that end up in you getting an offensive rebound," Stevens noticed when evaluating Gonzalez during the draft process, according to Bobby Krivitsky of Forbes.com.

Hugo Gonzalez is listed as the Celtics' third point guard on the depth chart, behind Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. He'll be a developmental project for Boston, but he has experience playing at the professional level for three years with Real Madrid.
