Brad Lander’s pathetic ‘arrest me’ drama only proves he’s desperate for attention

Brad Lander got exactly what he wanted Tuesday: A high-profile arrest that might somehow salvage a political career that was otherwise ending in ignomy.

By provoking ICE agents into arresting him, the city comptroller and mayoral wannabe got Democrats from Gov. Kathy Hochul on down posturing . . . er, rallying to his defense.

Lander repeatedly demanded to see a warrant for a guy ICE was detaining outside federal immigration court, holding his hand on the arrestee’s shoulder in an obvious bid to obstruct the agents enough to provoke an arrest.

Unsurprisingly, the charges got dropped after a few hours; Homeland Security has far more important things to do than play the heavy in Dems’ various morality plays.

Getting arrested in the name of fighting President Donald Trump’s ICE deportations is now all the rage among lefty politicians: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka (then hoping to kick-start his campaign for New Jersey governor) got himself cuffed at an ICE facility last month.

And Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) “forcibly impeded and interfered with federal officers as they attempted to arrest an individual” at the same facility, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey charged.

Similarly, Sen. Alex Padilla burst shouting into a presser by Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem, prompting Secret Service agents (who didn’t recognize him) to push him out of the room, to the ground and briefly into handcuffs.

It’s all pretty pathetic, and pointless in the larger scheme of things — much like Sen. Cory Booker’s “filibuster” the other week that wasn’t about any particular legislation but just greasing his fund-raising and then a deal for a book no one will ever read.

None of it will earn any respect or interest from moderate voters — and remember, even many Democrats support Trump’s deportations of criminal illegal immigrants.

Anyway, Lander’s stunt doesn’t even help any “asylum seekers,” except for the odd should-be-deportee who got to skate while ICE was wasting time on Brad’s political theater.

“No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences,” a Homeland Security spokesperson said.

“No one is above the law”: Wasn’t that practically the Democrats’ main talking point sometime last year?

Of course, it didn’t work because it was just a slogan; and they’ll have no more luck with this latest round of empty sound and fury.
