The Boston Red Sox welcomed back right-hander Brayan Bello after his brief appearance in the World Baseball Classic, where he played with the Dominican Republic.
Bello initially joined the Team DR roster to contribute to the pitching staff, but his time in the tournament ended earlier than most expected.
The decision came after Bello made one start for the DR. While many pitchers choose to remain with their national teams throughout the event, Bello decided it’d be better to return to the Red Sox and continue preparing for the upcoming season.
By returning to the Red Sox early, Bello will remain on schedule with the team’s pitching plans.
Speaking with Sean McAdam of MassLive, Bello explained that there was one important factor in why he left.
“I decided to come back because we have a starter for the Dominican Republic (Sunday), which is (Luis) Severino,” Bello told McAdam. “I trust that he’s going to go five or six (innings) and is going to be dominating that game. So I decided it was going to be best for us for me to come back here and throw my five and six innings or my 70 pitches that I need to do. I feel that was the right decision.”
The DR squad will have its toughest game yet, facing off against Team USA for a spot in the championship. Bello won’t be available.
