"Boston kills two birds with one stone" - MLB sportscaster reveals true reason Red Sox should favour Bo Bichette over Alex Bregman

The Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays lost Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, respectively, at the end of the season. Both teams continue to remain favorites to sign the free agents and fill the gaping hole in their infield.

The Red Sox were able to finalize a trade for Willson Contreras as their first baseman from the St. Louis Cardinals. Their path towards securing a stable lineup could be a direct battle with the Blue Jays.

According to Just Baseball's Jordan Leandre in his column on Dec. 27, the Red Sox are better off signing Bichette, which would virtually force a trade between the two East Coast teams.

"In poaching Bichette, Boston kills two birds with one stone. Bird No. 1, they add a very high-floor bat who’s in his late 20s and conceivably hits in the top third of the lineup behind Anthony for years to come. Bird No. 2, signing him could conceivably force the Jays to sign Bregman," he wrote.

Bregman will be heading to his age-32 season while Bichette is four years younger. There are question marks over how the former Houston Astros two-time All-Star will age, but he remains a top defensive third baseman, one season removed from a Gold Glove win.

On the other hand, barring an injury-ridden season in 2024, Bichette has been consistent, earning MVP votes in 2021-23 and 2025. But his defensive struggles at shortstop have been discussed. His team has reportedly relayed to his suitors that the two-time All-Star is okay with a move to second base.

Red Sox zeroing in on two major names besides Bo Bichette and Ketel Marte

According to Boston Globe's Alex Speier in his column on Dec. 27, aside from the two primary free agent targets, the Red Sox are also looking to get creative with two probable trade deals as fallback options for the marquee names.

"According to major league sources, the team’s primary targets remain fairly consistent: Free agent infielders Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, as well as trade candidates Ketel Marte (Diamondbacks) and Isaac Paredes (Astros). Aside from Marte, who is a switch-hitter, all are righthanded," he wrote.

Ketel Marte's trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks has been a topic of discussion at length this offseason. The 2024 NL MVP finalist has a cheap $116.5 million contract with six seasons of club control left.

Isaac Paredes, who was brought in by the Astros in the hot corner after Bregman at the end of 2024, played 102 games in 2025, hitting 20 home runs and 53 RBIs.
