The Boston Celtics might look dramatically different at the start of the upcoming campaign. Parting ways with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis was a formality, given the harsh realities of life above the second apron.
By moving the pair of champions, Boston saved nearly $200M.
The team is still over the first apron, though, and if Jayson Tatum is out for the season, the squad in place has no viable chance to hang another banner.
The Celtics have explored shedding even more salary by moving off of Jaylen Brown and/or Derrick White in an on-the-fly retool, but how likely is that potential league-altering move?
One ESPN insider thinks we'll find out the answer very soon.
While appearing on "First Take," NBA guru Brian Windhorst suggested the draft will determine Boston's future.
"There are teams in the top ten of the draft making offers," Windhorst said. "You'd potentially be able to replace them with some players and draft picks. I don't know if Brad Stevens is in love with one of these top guys—maybe they are."
The "other" Duke guys, Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach, would make sense in a White deal.
Knueppel shows a lot of parallels with former Celtic and Brad Stevens' disciple Gordon Hayward, who was an All-NBA player before tragically snapping his leg.
Maluach is a rim-running big who could instantly be a frisky defensive anchor and be a force around the dunker spot.
Brown is far less likely to be moved just because of his status within the team, but if San Antonio decides to change its philosophy and attempt a "win now" move, Rutgers guard Dylan Harper would have to be in the deal.
There are a lot of avenues Stevens and the front office could explore, but it's unlikely there's an enticing enough package to make the franchise part with one of its foundational players.
