Boise State entered the first College Football Playoff rankings at No. 25, a position that would normally suggest the Broncos are far from competing for a national championship. But the playoff's automatic qualification rules create a very different possibility.

If the final selections were made using the current rankings, Boise State would occupy the position reserved for the highest-ranked eligible conference champion outside the major conferences. That could allow the Broncos to reach the 12-team field while a higher-ranked team such as Ohio State, currently No. 12, misses out.

The scenario illustrates why the playoff rankings and the projected playoff bracket are not identical.

The 12-team format creates a major distinction

The College Football Playoff uses a 12-team field that includes automatic qualification for the five highest-ranked conference champions, along with seven additional teams selected by the committee.

That structure ensures that conference championships matter, even when the committee ranks certain at-large candidates higher.

Boise State is currently the highest-ranked team positioned to benefit from the fifth conference-champion berth. The Broncos are 7-1 and entered the initial rankings at No. 25.

Their path is not guaranteed. Boise State must continue winning and secure the necessary conference championship result. But the current ranking gives the program an identifiable route into the postseason.

Ohio State faces a different challenge

Ohio State is 6-2 and ranked No. 12. That position would normally place the Buckeyes on the edge of the playoff field, but automatic qualification can reduce the number of available at-large positions.

The Buckeyes must improve their résumé enough to avoid relying on the final available spot. Other teams ranked near the cutoff face similar uncertainty, including Notre Dame at No. 11 and several two-loss contenders.

Every remaining game can influence the final order.

The bracket will change before December

The first rankings are only an early snapshot. Conference championship results, head-to-head games and potential upsets will reshape the field.

Boise State could climb, fall or lose its projected automatic qualification position entirely. But the current scenario provides an important reminder for fans evaluating the playoff picture.

Being ranked higher than another team does not necessarily guarantee receiving a postseason invitation ahead of that opponent.

The selection format rewards certain conference champions, and Boise State currently stands to benefit. For Ohio State and other teams near the cutoff, that makes every remaining result especially important.
